About Us Minimize

SMHA was founded in 1984, and has been committed to the horse and rider community in Maryland ever since.  SMHA seeks to promote horsemanship, good sportsmanship and the betterment of the equestrian sport through its annual spring and summer series of schooling shows.

SMHA offers classes in multiple disciplines, including Western, English, Saddle Seat, and Driving. SMHA caters to the novice rider and the green animal, and strives to maintain an atmosphere of fun while learning to show.

Welcome Greetings from the Southern Maryland Horse Association!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for visiting our website and invite you to join us and enjoy our southern hospitality at our 2011 schooling show series!  For those of you who have not shown with us before, we hope this presents an opportunity for you to discover the joys of horse showing and the camaraderie of our membership.

We offer competition at several levels, from novice to intermediate and advanced riders.  There are many who come to Southern Maryland for the chance to school their green horses prior to moving up in the show world.  We strive to maintain an atmosphere of good sportsmanship and fun while encouraging good competition at a comfortable level. We attract a variety of riders and competitors, from individuals to schooling barns full of young eager riders.

Our Saturday show offers a variety of Western conformation, showmanship, horsemanship, pleasure and Western Working, with Saddle Seat, Trail and Driving classes.  This year for the first time we welcome drivers with a dedicated ring chock full of driving classes in keeping with the American Driving Society and USEF rules.

Our Sunday show hosts classes including Model, Equitation, hunter and pleasure, with something for just about every age group and every discipline. Our 12 Years & under ring caters to the very beginners with a walk trot agenda emphasizing small class sizes and good sportsmanship.

Our Tag Along Equitation Medal Classic sponsored by Tag Along Farm encourages competitive equitation in preparation for rated shows, while our Baywood Baby Medal class sponsored by Baywood Farms in our 12 Years and younger ring gives our very young riders a taste of the thrill of competition.

We hold our shows at the Prince Georges Equestrian Center, one of the most respected facilities in the area, with the absolute best footing around! We enjoy the full use of the outdoor grounds, and stalls are available for a fee. Camper sites are also available, and we engage exclusively the services of a professional photography service, Redline Race Photography. A full service snack bar is also on the grounds.

Come enjoy our Southern hospitality! We look forward to a busy and fun 2011 season and seeing old and new friends!!!
